Hung / Slow Start

Indications:
  • Stagnation of N1/N2
  • EGT creeping up slowly
  • N2 increases very slowly or stops increasing at approx. 7% N1 / 34% N2 with increasing EGT
Probable Causes:
  • Low Fuel Flow
  • Low Duct Pressure
  • Strong tailwind during start
Actions (Hung Start):
  • Note N1, N2 (stall less than 40%), FF, DUCT PRESS & EGT; EGT may rise above 300degC and Hot Start occurs
  • Abort start; FCS to cutoff (by recall)
  • Start Timer
  • Call for "ABORTED ENGINE START" Checklist
  • Inform GND and ATC
Actions (Slow Start):
  • If N2 continues to increase and engine stablises within two minutes, the following EGT are acceptable during slow start:
  • >> N2 40%, EGT(slow) 370-390, EGT(norm) approx. 200
  • >> N2 50%, EGT(slow) 425-440, EGT(norm) approx. 300
  • >> N2 60%, EGT(slow) <500,>

Circuit Breaker(s):
  • NO
MEL:
  • NO

If engine restart required:
  • Select IGNITERS to Both
  • When N2 0% (Reset EEC)
  • Restart affected engine
  • Return IGNITER to 1 or 2
Common Errors:
  • Slow in aborting the start
  • Not noting down engine parameters for maintenance info
  • Not selecting IGNITERS to both for subsequent start
  • Not waiting for N2 to spool to 0%
  • Not returning IGNITER to original position after a restart
